Current power outage in our area
Current power outage in our area
Power's going out on Tuesday in my street. Got a canister filter and sponge filter for my tanks. Picked up a battery pump for the sponge filter - anything else I should do to prepare?
Re: Current power outage in our area
You might want to consider taking the top off your canister filter and if possible, dropping an air stone into the bottom to agitate the media. It's one of those unavoidable situations, but I can imagine it's pretty stressful for you.
Re: Current power outage in our area
Fortunately, the temperature won't be a concern on Tuesday, so that's one less thing to stress about.
I'd advise against feeding your fish on Monday and Tuesday - they can easily go without food for a couple of days.
If you're worried about your external filter, you could consider temporarily relocating the media to the tank. Just keep in mind that sponges will float, so ceramic media or any other items with loose parts should be placed in a mesh bag.
It's good that you received advance notice of the power cut - it's always more manageable than when it happens unexpectedly.

Re: Current power outage in our area
I'd recommend doing a big water change and gravel cleaning the substrate either Sunday or Monday, so the water is nice and clean for Tuesday. This way, you'll minimize the stress on your fish.
Also, take a look at your filter - if it hasn't been cleaned in the last week, now's the time to do it. Less gunk in the filter means more oxygen for the beneficial bacteria.
If the power cut is going to be a long one and you won't be around, consider taking the filter media out and putting it straight into the aquarium. The oxygen in the water should keep the bacteria alive until the power comes back on.
However, if the power cut is only going to be an hour or two, or you'll be home, you can try something else. Take the outlet hose out of the aquarium and put it in a bucket. Let the bucket fill with water, then put the outlet hose back in the tank. Pour the bucket of water into the aquarium - do this every 30-60 minutes until the power is restored.
Don't forget to check your pump batteries - make sure they're new or fully charged. And as sSjey mentioned, it's best not to feed the fish the night before or on the day of the power cut.
