information about betta fish
information about betta fish
I just wrapped up my argumentative essay on fin-tanks in bowls and I'm on the fence about sharing it. Don't wanna stir up trouble or, you know, ruffle any feathers. I'm still working on my bibliography, but I'm making progress. Anyone interested in giving it a read, or should I just keep it to myself? Mods, feel free to move this thread if it's not in the right spot.

Re: information about betta fish
Always up for a good read, especially if it's about fin_tank in bowls.
Re: information about betta fish
I think many of us are curious about your essay, but let's be honest, we can get a bit passionate about our opinions, and that often leads to some lively discussions. I'm cautiously optimistic that sharing it could be a good idea, though.
Re: information about betta fish
Post it, we're all adults here. If it gets out of hand or is off-base, the mods will handle it.
Re: information about betta fish
Just a heads up, I'm only 14 and in 8th grade, so keep in mind that Lionors English class can only get me so far before I post this essay.
Re: information about betta fish
I also kinda went off on a tangent in the middle part. And, I'm still working on those summaries for the bibliography.
Re: information about betta fish
I still remember those tiny cups with the intriguing little fish. The Siamese Fighting Fish, or the Betta fish, is what they're known as. People claim these fish thrive in small bowls, but I strongly disagree. These fish are intelligent and can even acknowledge your presence. Many believe they live in dirty shallow water and like it. That's just not true. Like any fish, bettas need space to swim. Another myth is that they're lazy, which isn't true either. Poor water quality, lack of enrichment, or stress can make them seem lazy. Betta fish become active in optimal conditions.
Keeping a beautiful fish in a bowl is a terrible and unnatural act. It's true that you can find bettas in shallow and dirty water, but this only happens during the dry season. We all know that 'thrive' and 'tolerate' are very different words. Organizations like PETA and RSPCA state that all fish, including Siamese fighting fish, need space to swim freely and exercise. If betas don't exercise, they'll likely become bloated or lethargic. Their immune systems will degrade, causing infections and diseases that can lead to death. People have been misled into thinking these fish are decorations. "Bettas are not decorations and should never be forced to live in a barren little bowl." Think about being locked in a closet with no space and food rotting nearby, worsening the air quality. That's a betta's life when used as decor.
Like all fish, bettas need exercise, and they get it by swimming. "They should ideally be in a 5-gallon tank or larger, having an environment of this size allows the Betta fish to exhibit natural activity." This is entirely true. Wild splendens are active during the day, building nests and defending their territory. As I said earlier, all fish, including bettas, need ample space to swim. The bettas commonly available are the veil tail and the double tail caudal fin types. Both are extremely inbred and sickly from spawning. People buy the cheap fish and expect an easy job, but they're setting themselves up for failure.
Honestly, people have no right telling us what animals like. A common myth is that these fish like dirty water and small spaces. This misconception is infuriating. Once a group of people has an idea that makes a hobby easier, no matter how good or bad it is, it's hard to undo or erase that idea. The dirty water myth is disproved in many ways. "The water would become rapidly toxic as the ammonia accumulates from the fish's waste." Ammonia is harmful to living life, especially if you had to live with it your entire life. Most fish bowls have no filter, bubbler, or large surface area for oxygen exchange, leading to very low oxygenation. "Bettas are known to die due to the lack of oxygen in smaller fish bowls." It's crucial to keep the water oxygenated and ensure slow water flow, as bettas don't like being sloshed around in their tanks. Some argue that fishbowls don't need a heater or filter. While it's true that fish can live without a filter, an air stone should be necessary for oxygenation and a healthy fish. A heater is a must unless you live in a warm climate year-round, as betta fish are tropical and thrive in water from 72 degrees Fahrenheit to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
It's a shame that we humans won't listen to credible sources. Instead, we listen to PetSmart or Petco employees who tell us fish bowls are okay. I've noticed that the high price of a 1-gallon tank makes sense, as it's similar to or more expensive than a simple, lidless glass 5-gallon aquarium. I think the fishbowl battle has been taken into account by many chain retailers.
Your job begins now by signing petitions, boycotting systems, turning heads, and standing up for what's right. The fishbowl controversy will never perish. We've had this idea jammed into our brains with ads, movies, and media sources. It's astonishing what domestication can do to a single species over 1000 years. Hopefully, your head is turned away from the bowl and towards fin_tank. They are truly great companions. And after all, those little fish in barren cups deserve better.

I gotta say, you definitely weren't kidding about it being argumentative. That write-up was really well done, I enjoyed reading it. There were just a few tiny spelling errors here and there, but overall it was great. Are you planning on turning this in to a teacher or was it just something you worked on for fun?
Re: information about betta fish
Who knows? Last summer I made a similar presentation about goldfish in fish bowls, and now my principal offered to buy a 55 gallon tank at school for me to set up

@DragonTrims+Doubletails Your essay's really well-written, great job. Just a heads up since you're submitting it for grading, you might want to double-check your capitalization of 'Betta' - I noticed it's not consistent throughout. Don't want you to lose points over that.
It's an engaging read, can't wait to hear what your teacher thinks of it.
