Re: Discus Not Eating - Newbie Tank Manager

Put that fish in a hospital tank, it's the best chance to monitor its condition. Check if it's passing feces, and the color - is it whitish, yellow, or nothing at all. When they get this thin, it's tough to turn them around, their organs start shutting down. That fish has been declining for a long time, it might be its time. It's also possible it's something like worms, these cause wasting away slowly, often affecting the least dominant in the group, the most stressed and weakest fish.

Re: Discus Not Eating - Newbie Tank Manager

I'm willing to invest in a new tank setup if it means saving my Discus. For now, I'm looking for the best way to set up a temporary hospital tank. Should I use substrate or go without? What's the best approach for water - old, new, or a 50/50 mix? I'm assuming some decorations would be helpful for providing him with a sense of security and privacy.

In terms of feeding, what are my best options? Should I continue with the current food or try something different? I've already made some adjustments to the main tank, raising the temperature to 86 degrees and adding 6 tablespoons of salt for the 60-gallon tank. I'm hoping this will help, but I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to support his recovery.

Time is of the essence, and I'm getting a bit worried. He's been hiding out at the bottom of the tank and isn't coming up to eat. I know it's possible that it's just his time, but I want to try and save him if I can. I'm planning to set up a hospital tank today, and I'd appreciate any guidance on how to do it right. One tank can serve as both a quarantine and hospital tank, right? Once I get him set up, I know I'll have a lot of questions, but for now, I just want to make sure I'm giving him the best chance at recovery.

Re: Discus Not Eating - Newbie Tank Manager

I've had my share of Discus not eating, and I'm hoping my experiences can offer some hope. I've only had Discus for about a year, but I've already dealt with this issue a few times. One of my Discus stopped eating due to a hex issue, and luckily, metro helped resolve the problem. Unfortunately, another Discus didn't make it. More recently, I had another Discus that stopped eating, and it turned out to be an internal parasite issue - worms. I treated the whole tank with levamisole, and it did the trick.

I've learned that even if one Discus has a parasite issue, the others might be affected too, even if they're not showing symptoms yet. The good news is that the two Discus that recovered started gaining weight and growing quickly, even though they were past their optimal growth period. I'm sure Al will be able to guide you through this, but I wanted to share my story and offer some encouragement.
