My favorite staple foods

Post by bettaMagenta »

Does anyone know if this comes in a larger size? I've only been able to find it in this small bag so far...

Guess my Google skills were off that day... found it in bigger quantities too. Even has a size larger than what you're looking for.

This is our staple food, all our fish just love it. The water really churns for 3 days after feeding.

I'm not sure about this food, having "fish meal" as the main ingredient doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. Isn't that just a cheap filler that better brands tend to avoid? Hikari's considered one of the big players in the fish food world, but their ingredients are pretty questionable, relying on this fish meal thing quite a bit. Not that they're the only ones guilty of this, though.

I mix it up with other foods, usually on a 2-week rotation, just to keep things interesting for my fish. I'm not trying to defend Hikari or anything, but I think "fish meal" is one of those terms that can be all over the map - it could be top-notch stuff, or it could be the cheapest, lowest-quality ingredients. Honestly, I'd guess it's usually the latter, but you never know for sure.

It's worth noting the distinction between 'fish meal' and 'whole xxxx meal'. The former often consists of the less desirable parts - skin, bones, blood, and scales, essentially the bits humans don't want. On the other hand, meal from whole named fish, like whole herring meal, is generally of higher quality since it's made from the entire fish, not just the leftover bits.

Fish Food Ingredients

There's a wealth of information available on the analysis of dog foods, cat foods, cattle feed, and other livestock feeds. However, when I delved into researching fish food ingredients, I found a surprising lack of information. This article aims to partially fill that gap.
