Finding suitable native tank mates for boraras merah
Finding suitable native tank mates for boraras merah
I'm on the hunt for some small Boraras merah tank mates native to Borneo. Tomorrow, I'll be checking with the LFS hosting those paludarium workshops to see if they offer custom-built setups - specifically, I'm looking for something around 65cm long, 45cm wide, with 35cm water height and 25cm for plants. I've got to wait until tomorrow, though, since they're closed on Mondays. In my opinion, taller paludariums are the way to go - they're just better than the shallow ones. I'm not exactly a pro at building enclosures, so I'm hoping the LFS can help me out with that. I'm really fascinated by Boraras merah, so I'm doing my research. Borneo's an amazing place for fish to thrive.
Re: Finding suitable native tank mates for boraras merah
Hi @coltin, I'm wondering if 30 Boraras merah would be a sufficient school size. The workshop paludariums, unfortunately, aren't ideal for my needs, given their shallow design and the risk of fish jumping out. I'm leaning towards a custom-made setup, prioritizing a taller water height and slightly shorter plant height. My focus remains on recreating the Borneo ecosystem, and I'm researching fish native to the island. Although the calculator suggests brigittae species, I'm curious to know the optimal school size for these small fish. Thankfully, my stocking level will be below 100%.
Re: Finding suitable native tank mates for boraras merah
If you want to find suitable tank mates for Boraras merah native to Borneo, I'd recommend checking out FishBase. Just type in the Latin name and follow the links - it's a treasure trove of information on fish that have been caught together during scientific expeditions. It does take some digging, as the site isn't exactly designed with hobbyists in mind, but the payoff is worth it if you're willing to put in the effort.
Re: Finding suitable native tank mates for boraras merah
I'm looking for native Bornean tankmates that would complement the Boraras species well in a blackwater setup. I'm planning a large Bornean peat swamp forest paludarium, possibly for chilli or phoenix rasboras. I've been trying to find some suitable native tankmates that thrive in these conditions and are readily available in Australian LFS's. I've checked Fishbase, and while it's a great resource, I couldn't find any specific information on compatible tankmates for Boraras species.
Re: Finding suitable native tank mates for boraras merah
I've been doing some research on Boraras merah and I'm looking for some suitable small tankmates native to Borneo, their range. I'm planning to set up a custom-built paludarium, 65cm length x 45cm width, with 35cm water height and 25cm plant height. Does anyone have any experience with this setup or know of any fish that would thrive in these conditions?
I've also been looking into the minimum school count for Boraras merah, and I'm wondering if 30 would be enough. I've heard that the workshops at my LFS use shallow paludariums, which aren't ideal for these fish. I'm thinking of going with a bigger, custom-made paludarium to give them more space.
Has anyone tried keeping Boraras merah with other Borneo-native fish? I'm really interested in creating a Borneo ecosystem in my paludarium and I'd love to hear about any experiences or suggestions you might have.
