betta fish flaring

Post by Riveria »

I was curious about betta flaring - is it related to age or is that not a factor? My previous betta never really flared, and I tried to get Fezzik to do it but he wouldn't budge (no mirror though, so that might've been the issue). I'm starting to think some bettas just aren't into flaring - anyone else have a betta that never flares?

I'm not aware of an age requirement for betta flaring, but I do know mirrors are usually the key to getting them to flare.

Bettas can start flaring at a really young age, even in the juvenile stage. Their personalities play a role in it, so some just won't flare. Some bettas are triggered by reflections, others by other fish, and some are specific to their own sex. If you want to try with Fezzik, I'd suggest getting a small mirror and see how he reacts. It's healthy for them to flare a bit every now and then, it's like exercise for them.

My betta's a total show-off, flaring all the time. I think it's an age thing to some extent - he's about a year old now, and he didn't used to flare as much when he was younger. Not sure if it's a coincidence, but I've noticed that when they start building bubble nests, they get more territorial and start flaring. I'm no expert, but it seems like each betta's got its own personality - maybe yours is just a chill guy.

A happy, healthy betta's more likely to feel confident enough to flare. What's your tank setup like? Got a filter? Any plants or hiding spots? Is the water at the right temperature - 78-80 degrees? And are you feeding him regularly, at least once a day?
