Identifying hammer and zoa corals

Post by Kalixa9 »

Got a hammer here, or is this thing a wall hammer?

What's the Zoa type I'm looking at?

For the hammer, if you can get a pic when the lights are out and it's closed or not as expanded, that'll give you a better idea if it's a wall or branching hammer.

As for the zoas, I'm stumped - I got a small frag with 4-6 polyps and it's grown like crazy, now it's about the same size as your colony after just 4 months.

Could be steelblues or Blue Orgasms, those are my top guesses for the zoas.

Branching hammer, I'm pretty sure. If you take a closer look, the polyps are arranged in small circular clusters - different heads, that's the giveaway. The zoas, though, I'm still stumped. Check this out, maybe it'll help with the zoa ID: http://www.coralpedia.com/index.php?mod ... _itemId=15

When lights are off, my hammer closes up. It's got multiple heads, then when it opens, they all come together to form a big round ball. That's how I'd imagine a branching hammer would look, right?

I came across this article that might help with identifying your hammer and zoas. It's from Advanced Aquarist, a pretty reliable source. Check it out, it's got some great info on corals.

That description sounds like a branching hammer to me, and I also agree on the separate circular polyps arrangement.
