Fungus on sps corals

Post by tider »

Hey everyone

Just got done fixing a fallen SPS colony and decided to inspect one of my frags. Found some little white spots that look like fungus growing on it.

Had this issue with another SPS too, but only in a couple spots.

Would really appreciate any advice.

Is this the only frag affected or have you noticed the same issue on other corals? I'd definitely try swishing it around in a small container to see if the white spots come off - it's possible they're just loose debris. The SPS filaments do seem to be extended, and the white spots do resemble fungus growth. It's also possible a crab or other critter was climbing on the frag and caused the issue. A dip in Revive might be worth trying, as it's supposed to remove and condition corals - it could help clear up the problem.

It's happening on two SPS for me, just a small white fungus on the tips or sides, really white.

Do you have hermit crabs?

I'm in the same boat, finding this issue on my corals too. I've got a thread going on, 'what is this', and it's just me responding so far. I'm considering a few options - hydrogen peroxide dip at 25%, bifuron II, or red slime remover. Flintix9t seems promising as it shares a chemical that's supposed to help with fungus. Thoughts on these options?

Doesn't seem like it's alk burn to me.

I'm not so sure about the alk burn, mine's been steady at 8.

I'm not convinced they're filaments, even though that's a possibility. See, the filaments I've noticed before do indeed come out of the holes on the coralites, but the white spots I'm seeing are on the tips and other solid areas of the coral with no visible holes. They look different from the stringy filaments I've seen before, so I'm still stumped. Guess the pics aren't as clear as I thought, lol.
