Just brought home this little black orchid guy and he's chillin' in a temp tank for now - still got about 2 weeks to go before it's fully cycled.
No fin type or anything was specified, just 'black orchid', so I'm kinda curious - anyone have any idea what kind he might be?
Looks pretty young to me, or am I just seeing things?

Re: identifying my betta's breed
I'm pretty sure it's a fluxeonscale betta. Looks like a great little guy.
Re: identifying my betta's breed
I can see why you'd think that now, the fluxeon scale does seem to fit. I was under the impression black orchid was just a color description, not an actual type. Black orchid fluxeon could be a possibility, and I have to admit, black fluxeon does have a nice ring to it.

Your betta is stunning. I'm getting a betta vibe from it, lol.
Re: identifying my betta's breed
To determine the tail type of your betta, try holding a mirror in front of him - this will cause him to flare.
When flared, take a closer look at the edges of his tail.
If they're 180 degrees apart, it's likely a half moon.
More than 180 degrees, and it's an over half moon.
If the edges are between 60 and 90 degrees, it's probably a superdelta.
Anything 60 degrees or less, and it's a delta.

I used an exercise mirror I have for my other fish and put it in his tank, he wasn't really interested though and wanted to look at other stuff more. Hopefully he'll get comfortable soon. I've been trying to greet him often so he can get used to me.sSjey wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2023 8:55 am To determine the tail type of your betta, try holding a mirror in front of him - this will cause him to flare.

I'd say half moon plakets with those gorgeous "Black Orchid" colours. The scales do have a certain sheen to them, reminiscent of dragon scales, but I'm thinking it might just be the lighting or the colour combo playing tricks on me - or maybe it's a new variation, who knows?
Re: identifying my betta's breed
I'm not entirely convinced about the placket, but I can see how that might be a possibility once I get a better look at his fins when he flares. A fluxeon scale pattern would be really cool, though - maybe that's just wishful thinking, or it's just the way the coloring is playing tricks on me.florap wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2023 10:24 am I'd say half moon plakets with those gorgeous "Black Orchid" colours. Re: identifying my betta's breed
I'm quite certain he's not a plakat betta, his fins are far too large for that classification. As mentioned earlier, I believe he's a halfmoon fluxeon betta. The "Black orchid" label likely refers to his coloration, rather than a specific breed or type. With over 15 years of experience breeding bettas, I'm fairly confident in my assessment.Mavyn wrote: ↑Wed Oct 18, 2023 8:45 pm Just brought home this little black orchid guy and he's chillin' in a temp tank for now - still got about 2 weeks to go before it's fully cycled.
