Is marine velvet a problem?
Is marine velvet a problem?
I just checked on my maroon clown and I'm getting a bit worried - he's got this thin white lining around his pectoral fins, and a couple of tiny white spots on his forehead. I've had him in my 20 gallon tank for a while now, and it's been a couple months since I last added any new livestock. The weird thing is, I inspect my tank every day and I only just noticed this today. I do have a cleaner shrimp in the tank with him, but I'm not sure if that's relevant. The white lining is really faint, but it's definitely there. Could this be the start of marine velvet?
Re: Is marine velvet a problem?
I'm not going to take a guess without seeing some photos. Marine velvet can be tough to diagnose, and it's often mistaken for a parasitic infection where the fish is just producing mucus as a defense mechanism.

I'll get some pics up later today, thanks for the feedback.

While you're waiting to take those pics, take a closer look at your water quality and salinity. Poor water quality's a major stress factor for fish, and when they're stressed, they can produce excess mucous.
