Will BB with 80% WC 3x/wk stunt 3 inchers?
Will BB with 80% WC 3x/wk stunt 3 inchers?
Can you run 80% water changes 3 times a week in a bare bottom tank without stunting 3" fish?

I'd be cautious about overfeeding, it's crucial for maintaining good water quality.

Of course. I would be wary of how much you feed for water cleanliness
So, no need for daily water changes then? I get that doing them daily would give us a better shot at avoiding stunting, but I'm trying to figure out where that line is.

Daily water changes aren't necessary for discus past 3 inches. That rigorous regimen was mainly for serious breeders and hobbyists who maxed out their tank and sought every bit of growth. In my experience, once you've raised discus beyond 3 inches, daily water changes aren't required to prevent stunting. I've grown out discus to 4 inches with 3x, even 2x, water changes in the past. To maintain water quality, though, you'll need to be mindful of your feeding amounts, as elixir pointed out.

I think you'd be better off with 50% daily or 80% every other day, at least until they hit 4 inches. My new group is at 4.5-5 inches now and I've switched to 50% every other day. I feed them pretty frequently, almost every time I walk by the tank. If you cut back on food and water changes, it might slow down their growth. What's the tank size?

I recall a seasoned discus breeder once sharing a valuable insight. It's akin to saying I've just purchased a luxury vehicle, but I'm hesitant to follow the recommended maintenance schedule. I want to push the limits, change the oil every 30,000 miles instead of the advised 3,000. I'm aware many will advise against this approach, so I'm only interested in hearing from those who have taken a similar risk. It's likely that the responses I receive will come from individuals who are willing to gamble with the engine's longevity. Perhaps you should consider alternative fish species that might be more suited to your needs.

I've had my fair share of discus over the years, and I can tell you one thing - water quality is key. Clean water equals happy fish. Happy fish don't get stressed. And stressed fish are more prone to diseases. So, keep your water clean and you'll avoid all the hassle of medicating them all the time.

While advancements in discus quality are happening, it's essential to recognize the difference between biological evolution and technological innovation. Cars can improve exponentially with each new model, but biological organisms like discus take centuries to adapt and change. Today's discus might seem more resilient than their predecessors, but much of that progress is due to improved care methods, like regular water changes. Discus remain sensitive fish, and their hardiness is largely dependent on our ability to provide them with optimal conditions.

I've been back in the discus game for almost two years now, after a 15-year break. I used to keep them from the late 80s to the early 2000s. Let me tell you, they've got some new colors now, but that's about it. Water changing is just as crucial, if not more so, especially when they're young. Clean water is everything. Period. If you want strong, healthy fish, keep the water clean. Simple as that. Want to play with fire and see how little you can get away with? Don't change the water. I'm on other forums and it's hilarious how many people tell me I'm overdoing it with the water changes. But you know what? I never hear from them for long. Francis is just keeping it real.

Back to OP, is it possible to do 80% 3x/week WCs in a BB without stunting 3" fish? In my opinion, with the right conditions, it's doable. Proper water quality is key, along with a diet of high protein food and a stress-free environment. The quantity of food is also crucial - too much and you risk compromising water quality.

I don’t know why you like being so off putting in your responses.... First off Cadillacs run synthetic so you have 10k miles between changes. Plus most cars that run regular oil will tell you when you need an oil change now. So times change and the hobby evolves, like the quality and hardiness of fish getting better. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t keep up with the times and subscribe to the that’s the way it’s always been done mentality.
To the OP... Like every other living thing on the planet, Discus have genetics that ULTIMATELY determine their size and shape.
I agree with jolvy here - genetics play a huge role in determining the size and shape of Discus. However, I still believe that with proper care and conditions, you can minimize the risk of stunting your fish.
