live shrimps as live food

Post by Blossom »

I switched from a planted tank to discus, and during the transition, I had a bunch of shrimps in the tank that just kinda stayed with the discus.
Few days in, I noticed my discus started chasing and eating the shrimps.
Now I'm wondering, is it safe to feed my discus small live shrimps?

Yes, I think it's safe for your discus to eat small live shrimps. I've experienced this myself, as I mentioned earlier - my discus started chasing and eating the shrimps in my tank after I transitioned from a planted tank.

I'm actually planning on doing the same thing. I've got a small, heavily planted tank for my Betta, and it's just overrun with shrimps - they're breeding like crazy, to the point where even my Betta can't keep the population under control. I've been moving some of the cherry shrimps to my discus tank, seems like a good way to utilize them.

I'm not sure that's the most cost-effective way to feed your discus. I personally use culls in my tanks for the discus, angelfish, and GBRs. Just the other day, I observed two GBRs with Amano shrimp in their mouths - quite the sight.
