Do neolamprologus multifasciatus require tankmates?

I'm wondering if shell-dwelling multis need dither fish to feel at ease. I've got three of them in my 30-gallon tank, and they seem really on edge. I recently added more shells - 18 now - and it's been interesting to see each of them claim their favorites. I'm using Seachem's Rift Lake salts and Prime for water conditioning, and I'm hoping that's helping. The tank's 30 inches long, so I'm hoping the extra space is beneficial. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to keep them happy and calm.

I'd keep them solo, they can be a bit timid at first but just sit in front of the tank, don't move, and they'll get used to you and their surroundings over time.

They're naturally quite timid, so it's not unusual for them to be a bit nervous. I think with time and patience, they'll become more confident in their surroundings.
