Green Discus
Green Discus
I've been searching for pics of Green Discus. I wanted to see them as adults before buying from Uncle Sams. I bought two, but I'm confused - they're brown, not green. Does anyone know why they're called Green Discus? Do they get greener as adults? I've been looking everywhere for mature Green Discus. Even tried Google. Can't find any. I think the discus below is a Green Discus. Anyone have one to show off?

Not a Green Discus, I gotta say though, that discus of yours is a real showstopper.
I've been around this hobby for a while, 25 years to be exact, and I've noticed people are finally asking the right questions - where's the fish from, what's its origin story? They're not just asking about the color, they're digging deeper. And I love it.
You see, different regions, rivers, and lakes have their own unique characteristics, and that's what makes our hobby so fascinating. Some systems have browns that overlap with heckles, or blues with browns, and that's what makes it so interesting.
But, back to your fish - it's not a green discus. I know I'm usually not one to claim I'm right, but in this case, I'm pretty confident. That being said, I really do love that fish of yours, it's a beauty.

Wild green discus aren't actually green, they're more brown with green undertones. Yours, while a beautiful discus, doesn't seem to be a pure green discus, basis is right on that one.

I've come across domestic-bred green discus being sold as Ocean Greens, which have this striking metallic color. Apparently, Lee Koon Yen is credited with developing this particular strain.

I wouldn't exactly call them brown based, more like they've got a purplish undertone merged with faded yellow, or sometimes a brown purplish or yellowish hue, like a banana that's just starting to ripen, with thick eye bars and those gorgeous green striations - whether they're subtle, half Royal, or full-on Royal. And let's not forget the red spots, or lack thereof, on the lower back quadrant.
Just my two cents, and keep in mind I'm no expert - my folks had other plans for me, and NYU's ichthyology program wasn't in the cards. I got sidetracked by literature and fish, then found myself in the Marine Corps... long story. Anyway, I think Heckle got separated from the others for good reason, and I believe green discus deserve their own category too.

I also got one from Uncle Sams. I just thought it looked more natural compared to my others.

I was also drawn to the green discus because of its natural appearance. It adds a nice touch to my collection, which is mostly made up of other discus. I found a video on Google showing adult green discus parents with their fry from Uncle Sams - it's the closest thing I could find to seeing them as adults.

Guess it's probably a crossbreed then, since mine don't resemble typical greens - they're more on the brown side.
