I'm on the right track now, I think. My pH's sitting at 8.2 and my tap water's pretty hard, which I'm hoping will work for the Malawis. This morning's test results were all good - no ammonia, no nitrite, so I'm feeling pretty confident. Time to go pick up my new fish.

Angels in 8.2, are you kidding me?
This is a disaster waiting to happen, trust me I've been there. Four years ago I made the same mistake, and let me tell you, it was a nightmare for both the angels and the cichlids. They just aren't meant to be together.

Wait, I think I misread the situation.
You're planning on getting the Malawi Cichlids alone, right?
That seems like a much better plan, considering your pH and water hardness.
I was worried you were gonna put them with angels, but it seems like you're on the right track.
No need for alarm, I overreacted.

When considering mixed African tanks, incompatibilities can arise due to the varied nature of the fish. You might have haps or Mbunas, and sometimes even accidental cross-breeding from a show tank, making it challenging to predict their compatibility.

Ordering from a reputable breeder online might be a better option for you. Keep in mind that most local fish stores don't properly maintain Mbuna, the herbivorous Malawi cichlids.

Once you've picked up your fish, posting pictures here would be helpful. We might be able to identify the specific species to some extent.
8.2 pH is suitable for Malawis.
