getting the most from your aquarium

Post by flyer9 »

There's something special about a well-maintained tank. I find myself unwinding in front of it, but I don't just sit there in silence. I like to set the mood with some soothing tunes on my headphones and get comfortable in my favorite chair. It's amazing how calming it is to watch the fish swim about, their movements almost therapeutic. What about you, how do you like to appreciate your aquatic friends?

For me, it's all about enjoying the different tanks around the house at various times.

I love starting my day with a cup of coffee in front of my living room tank, either the one with the tiger barbs and zebra loach or the one with the Congo tetras and corydoras. After walking the dog, I'll move to the other tank and enjoy my next coffee.

Our kitchen tank, featuring the panda corys and silvertips, is always a hub of activity, whether we're making tea, coffee, or cooking. I used to have the tiger barbs in the kitchen, but they were getting a bit too good at begging for food, and everyone in the house was sneaking them treats despite my warnings.

In the evenings, I enjoy unwinding in bed with a good book or on my PC, watching the fish swim in my bedroom tank. Although, it's not as relaxing as it used to be since I had to move my angel in there to escape the nippy Congos. Now, I get to watch him chase the hatchets, which is quite entertaining, even if he never catches them.

I can just imagine you getting through a whole pot of coffee in one sitting. It sounds like you've got a lovely setup, but I have to admit, all those tanks and fish watching you from every room might just make me a bit anxious. I'm sure it's worth it, though - you must be a pro at tank maintenance by now.

What about the rest of you - do you have any special rituals or habits when you're spending time with your tanks?

I've got a pretty open setup in my home, with the kitchen, dining and living areas all flowing into each other, but unfortunately, I can't see the tank from the living room. So I end up spending a lot of time at my dining table with my laptop, browsing TFF and getting lost in all the conversations. I'm also a bit of a YouTube fan, I love watching vloggers and their 'shows', and I'll often sit there for hours watching them while keeping an eye on my tank. Tea is a big part of my tank-watching experience, I go through a lot of cups while I'm sitting there.

Taking photos of my tank and fish is another way I enjoy my setup - I love capturing the different moments and behaviors of my fish, and it's a great way to relax and unwind.

I've got my Oscars and community tanks in the living room, perfect for kicking back and taking it all in. The couch is my spot, great view, no disturbance to the fish. They just do their thing, and I get to watch - it's quite the show. Right now, I'm watching my kuhli loaches, they're putting on a dance for me, pretty entertaining. Then I've got my breeding room, that's where the malawis, jacks, and GTs live. I like to get up close with them, they love interacting with me. My male GT will flare up, the jacks think I'm lunch, and the malawis just want treats - it's always something going on in there.

My tank is always immaculate, not in a clinical way, but it's got to be spotless. I'm so used to it being that way, I hardly give it a second glance most days. But when someone walks in and does a double take, exclaiming over how amazing it looks, that's when I really take a step back and appreciate it. I'll find myself staring at it for ages, taking in all the little details that make it so special.

I catch myself gazing at my tanks daily, especially since a couple are right in my front room. The amount of time I spend watching them can vary, depending on how much beer I've got on hand. But I've got to say, I really do love watching my tank - it's super relaxing.

I have my tanks situated in the kitchen, it's where I spend most of my time with three little ones running around. I find myself enjoying the simple pleasure of watching my bettas swim about, especially when they're perched on the window sill. Doing dishes is a great time to observe them, they always seem to get more active while I'm busy at the sink.

My tank's in a great spot - right next to my computer and directly in front of my couch. In the morning, I love grabbing a coffee and sitting beside the tank, just watching the fish before I turn on the rest of the lights. It's a great way to start the day. Throughout the day, I'll catch glimpses of them while I'm working and it always brings a smile to my face.

I've got eight tanks spread out around the house.

Three of them are in the living room, so I can see 'em all from the sofa. I spend hours watching the fish in the evenings - the TV's been relegated to background noise.

The kitchen/diner's got three tanks too, and I can see 'em all from where I sit at the dining table. This is where I sneak in my cigarette breaks and usually have my laptop out, so I can glance up at the tanks while I'm online. The betta tank's next to the sink, so he keeps me company while I'm washing up. The puffer tank's on the worktop, so I chat with them while I'm cooking dinner.

There's one tank in our bedroom - I like to unwind in front of it before bed or when I'm not feeling like getting up in the morning. And my son's got a shrimp tank in his room, so we spend some time watching those before his bedtime.
