Re: Will this work

I'm actually planning to buy from my local shop, despite them not being Discus specialists. The owner seems really happy with the breeder he's using in Vietnam, and I've got a lot of faith in him. He's run the aquatic department at Chester Zoo, so I trust his knowledge and connections. I'm not planning to buy for a few months yet, so I'll have plenty of time to see the quality of the discus he's getting in and make sure I'm happy before committing.

When buying locally, ask your guy if you can pick up the fish as soon as they arrive. This way, they'll go straight into your tank instead of sitting in his. I think buying online is still the better option, though - you get more choices and often higher quality fish. But I've heard your local stores are much better than ours. With online breeders, you're dealing with one source, so the fish come from the same place. Local stores, on the other hand, can get fish from different wholesalers, who might be looking for the best deal. This can lead to fish from different places getting mixed together in the same store tank, or even in different tanks at the store, and then getting sick when you combine them. Check out the German Asian thread for more info.

Yeah, I knew about the potential risks with mixed fish from different breeders. The bloke I'm using, though, is top drawer, so I've got complete faith in him. He's only bringing in stock from one supplier, which aligns with my own concerns. I've got time to monitor the quality he's getting, and if issues arise, they'll likely show up before I commit to buying.

Being on soft water is a bonus, and I've also got a dedicated discus breeder just 20 miles away if I decide to go that route instead.

If you're already set up for 50% daily changes with heated and dechlorinated water, why not take it a step further? Doing a 100% water change would be just as quick and could make a significant difference in growth.

If you can do a 50% water change in a couple of minutes, why not do a 100% water change instead? The difference in growth will be significantly better.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I'm still learning and figuring things out. My initial thought was to stick with 50% daily changes because I have a system in place that makes it easy to dechlorinate, aerate, and heat the water in advance. I could possibly push it to 70% with this method.

My main concern with larger changes is disrupting the bacterial balance in the tank. I've read that big changes can upset the balance, and I want to avoid that if possible. I'm open to advice and opinions, though - I'm still new to all this and eager to learn.
