Best filter for sand tanks
I've been running a sand substrate tank for about six months now, and I'm not sure my current filter is cutting it. It's a 40-gallon with a mix of Corydoras and Tetras. The filter is a basic HOB, but sand keeps getting kicked up and clogging the intake. Anyone have recommendations for a better setup?

Yo, sand tanks can be a pain with HOBs. I switched to a canister filter last year, and it's been a game-changer. Less clogging, more flow control. I'm using a Fluval 307 on my 55-gallon sand tank, and it's chill. Just gotta rinse the media every few weeks.

Canister filters are indeed more efficient for sand substrates. The Fluval 307 is a solid choice, but if you're looking for something quieter, the Eheim Classic 350 is worth considering. It has a larger media capacity and better flow distribution, which helps prevent dead spots in the tank.

Thanks for the suggestion. How often do you find yourself cleaning the intake sponge on the Fluval?

I check the intake sponge every two weeks, but it's usually not too bad. Sand settles quick, so as long as you're not stirring it up constantly, it's manageable. My Corys love digging, but the Fluval handles it like a champ.

If you're concerned about maintenance frequency, adding a pre-filter sponge to the intake can reduce the amount of sand reaching the main filter. This is particularly useful if you have active bottom-dwellers like Corydoras. It's a simple and cost-effective solution.

Yep, pre-filter sponges are clutch. I forgot to mention I use one too. It's like $5 and saves so much hassle.StormerX wrote: ↑Tue Sep 16, 2025 10:08 am If you're concerned about maintenance frequency, adding a pre-filter sponge to the intake can reduce the amount of sand reaching the main filter. Appreciate all the advice. I'll look into the Fluval 307 and grab a pre-filter sponge. Sounds like it'll solve my sand issues without breaking the bank.
