Nope, hardness affects osmoregulation. Juvies need soft water (GH 1-4) to grow right. Upgrade that tank size too—40's tight for 4.

Beef heart's messy but worth it. I rinse my filter media monthly in tank water. Also, angelic, test your tap's TDS—might explain the dull colors.

Wild Discus? Different ballgame. Tank-raised can adapt, but why risk it? Soft water's cheap with peat or almond leaves.
