fish that don't harm plants
I'm setting up a planted tank and want to add fish that won't mess with the plants. Any suggestions? I've got Java Fern, Anubias, and some Vallisneria in a 20-gallon with a sponge filter, sand substrate, and LED lighting. Water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Looking for something chill that won't uproot or nibble.

Otocinclus catfish are a solid choice. They're tiny, peaceful, and won't bother your plants. I've kept them with similar setups, and they just graze on algae. Just make sure you've got some biofilm or supplement with algae wafers. They're kinda sensitive to water changes though, so keep it steady.

What about guppies? I've heard they're plant-safe, but I'm not sure. My tank's got Java Moss and some floating plants, and I don't want them wrecked.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into Otos. Do they do okay in groups, or can I start with just a couple?Rivora9 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 6:30 pm Otocinclus catfish are a solid choice. They're shoaling fish, so at least 6 is ideal. They'll be less stressed and more active. Just acclimate them slowly, and maybe drip acclimate if your tap water's sketchy. Also, avoid copper meds if you ever need to treat the tank, they're super sensitive to it.

I've got a few neon tetras in my planted tank, and they've never touched the plants. They're pretty chill and add a nice pop of color. My tank's got a hang-on-back filter and a gravel substrate, but I'm thinking of switching to sand.

Neons are a good call. How many do you keep in your tank? I'm worried about overstocking if I add them with Otos.

In a 20-gallon, you could do 6 Otos and 10-12 neons, but keep up with water changes. Neons are light bioload, but they're schooling fish too, so don't go below 6. Just watch the nitrates, especially with the plants still establishing.

I've got 8 neons in my 15-gallon, and they're doing great. They don't bother the plants at all, and they're fun to watch. I do a 25% water change every week, and the plants seem happy. Maybe I'll try Otos next.
