How to prevent tumors in Betta fish

Post by fluxly »

I've heard tumors are pretty common in bettas, especially as they age. What's the best way to prevent them? My guy's about a year old, and I'm worried since his dad had a tumor. Tank's a 5-gallon with a sponge filter, heated to 78F, and I do weekly 25% water changes. He's got a planted tank with some driftwood, no tankmates.

Tumors can be genetic, but water quality and diet play a big role. Make sure you're using a good water conditioner, and avoid overfeeding. High-quality pellets with varied supplements like frozen daphnia or brine shrimp can help. Also, keep an eye on ammonia spikes, even small ones can stress them out long-term.

Yep, my last betta got a tumor too. I didn't know what to do. Now I'm scared for my new one. Should I change his food or something? He's in a 3-gallon with a heater, but I only do water changes every two weeks.

You gotta bump those water changes to weekly, dude. Stale water's a sketchy vibe for bettas. Also, maybe upgrade to a 5-gallon if you can, more room to chill.

I heard some people say tannins help. Like from Indian almond leaves. My betta's tank has 'em, and he's been good so far. Dunno if it's luck or what, but worth a shot.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll try adding some variety to his diet and maybe grab those almond leaves. Appreciate it.

Tannins can boost their immune system, so it's not just luck. Just don't overdo it, too much can lower the pH more than you'd want.

Also, keep an eye on the temp. Fluctuations can mess with their health. A good heater with a thermostat is key. My guy's been thriving since I switched to a more reliable one.
