How to prevent popeye in Bettas

Post by floridan »

My betta's eyes look a bit swollen lately. Gonna check the water params but what else should I look out for? Tank's a 5 gal, heated to 78, sponge filter, no tankmates. Feed him pellets twice a day.

Water quality's key. Test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate. If those are good, could be bacterial. Try aquarium salt, 1 tsp per gallon, and keep the water clean with frequent changes.

Agreed. Also, check for sharp decor. Sometimes physical injury leads to popeye. Smooth everything out if needed.

Mine had popeye once. Did daily water changes, added salt, and it cleared up in a week. Just gotta stay on top of it.

If it's bacterial, might need meds. Erythromycin works but don't overdo it. And yeah, keep the tank spotless. Bettas are tough but popeye's sketchy if ignored.

Mine got it from stress after a tank move. Lowered the light, added some plants, and he chilled out. Sometimes it's not just the water.

Stress is a big factor. Keep the environment stable, avoid sudden changes, and they'll usually bounce back.

Let us know how it goes. Consistency is key with popeye, so stick with the plan even if it takes a bit.

And if it doesn't improve in a week or gets worse, consider a vet. Better safe than sorry with these guys.
