Favorite corydoras species

Post by bigtide »

What's everyone's favorite corydoras species? I've got a 20 gallon with some Bronze Corys, but I'm thinking of adding another type. Looking for something chill that won't mess with my current setup.

I've always been partial to Corydoras sterbai. They've got that striking orange fin contrast, and they're hardy enough for most community tanks. Just make sure your water's on the softer side, around 6.5 pH, and they'll thrive.

Sterbai are solid, but Pygmy Corys are where it's at if you wanna keep things small and low-key. They're tiny, so they won't crowd your tank, and they've got this cute lil' wiggle when they swim. Just toss 'em some sinking pellets and they're good.

I've got some Albino Corys in my 30 gallon. They're pretty basic, but they're easy to care for and get along with everything. Not sure if they're the most exciting, though.

If you're looking for something unique, try Corydoras habrosus. They're smaller than Pygmies and have this delicate, almost translucent look. They're shy at first but once they settle in, they're active and fun to watch. Just keep the tank well-planted for them to feel safe.

I second Sterbai. They're like the gold standard for color and personality. Plus, they're not too picky about food, just gotta keep the water clean.

Thanks for the suggestions, y'all. Leaning toward Sterbai or Pygmies now. Gonna check my LFS this weekend to see what they've got in stock.

Pygmies are great, but keep in mind they're more sensitive to water quality. If you go that route, maybe bump up your water changes to once a week.

Yeah, Pygmies can be a bit finicky if your tank's not stable. But if you're on top of maintenance, they're worth it. Also, they school tighter than Sterbai, so you'll see 'em moving as a group, which is kinda cool.

Don't overlook habrosus, though. They're like Pygmies but with more personality. I've got a group of six in my 15 gallon, and they're always out and about, sifting through the sand. Just make sure you've got a fine substrate so they don't hurt their barbels.
