is my tank too new for plants?
I just set up my 20 gallon tank a week ago, and I'm wondering if it's too early to add plants. I've got a basic substrate, no CO2, and a cheap LED light. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Should I wait or can I start planting now?

You're good to go, dude. Plants can help stabilize a new tank. Just stick to easy stuff like Anubias or Java Fern. They're chill and don't need much light or CO2. I threw some in my tank day one and they're thriving.

I'd say go for it, but keep an eye on the nitrate levels. New tanks can be unpredictable. Start with a few hardy plants and see how they do. If they start melting, don't panic, just give it time.

Yep, totally agree. Anubias is a tank, pun intended. Just don't bury the rhizome or it'll rot. Tie it to a rock or driftwood instead.fin_frenzy8 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 7:39 pm You're good to go, dude. Plants can help stabilize a new tank. Just stick to easy stuff like Anubias or Java Fern. Nope. Your tank's fine. Plants don't care about tank age as long as the water's stable. Just don't go nuts with high-tech plants right away. Stick to the basics and you'll be golden.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll grab some Anubias and Java Fern this weekend and see how they do. Appreciate the help!

Good call starting slow. I made the mistake of overplanting my first tank and it was a mess. Less is more when you're starting out.

I don't know much about plants, but my tank's been running for two weeks and I added some moss balls. They're doing fine so far. Maybe try those?

Moss balls are a solid choice, but they're kinda boring, no offense. If you want something with a bit more pizzazz, go for some Cryptocoryne. They're tough as nails once they settle in.

Just make sure you're doing regular water changes. New tanks can have weird swings in params, and plants can be sensitive to that. Keep it steady and you'll be fine.
