identifying an unknown fish species
I recently picked up a fish from this huge aquatic store - I'm talking massive. They literally had no idea what it was, just tossed it in with the kribensis tank. It was the only one, and they basically gave it away for $5, citing their lack of knowledge. Anyway, I also wanted to mention I recently stumbled upon some fry - only three, mind you - and I'm pretty sure they're hybrids, a mix of this mystery fish and my blue cichlid. The fry don't really resemble either parent, but they're still young, so not much color to speak of yet. The pics I posted are of the same fish.

Looks like a cichlid to me, that's about all I can say.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. Honestly, I'm stumped too - no idea if it's old world or not.

Re: identifying an unknown fish species
To be honest, this was a tough one for me, not even sure if I've got the right one since I'm not exactly a cichlid expert.
Think I've narrowed it down to the Psudotropheus group, though.
http/www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=889 or http/www.africancichlids.net/gallery/gallery-malawi.php (scroll down to Psudotropheus flavus and check the pics)
Do these look like your fish at all? If not, I'd suggest googling Psudotropheus species of cichlids - you might stumble upon one that looks like your cichlid.
Just a heads up, though - there are over 1,400 cichlid species out there, so it's like finding a needle in a haystack for someone like me.
Good luck

Re: identifying an unknown fish species
Thanks again for the help, I really appreciate it. I actually have some psudotropheus species in the tank already, that's the blue fish I mentioned earlier. I'll try and get some better pics, the ones I posted don't really do the mystery fish justice - it's actually quite small and round, not long and oval like it looks.

Re: identifying an unknown fish species
Here are some more pictures, I don't think they'll be much help, but the mystery fish has a blue mouth, red fin, and orange body. For size reference, my Pleco is about 14 inches long, and you can see how much smaller the mystery fish is in comparison. The blue fish in the pictures is the other one, the Psudotropheus, which is noticeably bigger than the mystery fish. I've been searching online for a match, but so far, nothing's been an exact match. I've had the mystery fish for almost three months now, and I'm starting to think it might be worth making a new thread in the New World section if I can.
