Separating elegance coral from its skeleton
Separating elegance coral from its skeleton
I've had this elegance coral for over 2 years now. It's been a wild ride for my tank the past couple months - cyano outbreak, lost a few corals, but I thought for sure this one would make it. I recently switched from 2x150w MH to a radion Pro, and started dosing Red Sea NOPOX. All my parameters are spot on, but just the other day I noticed the coral was separating from its skeleton. It's not fully extending, I'd say about halfway. The separation is getting bigger and more noticeable by the day. Is there anything I can do to save it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Separating elegance coral from its skeleton
I'm really worried about my elegance coral, and I'm willing to try anything. Would super gluing the edge back on be a viable solution, or am I completely off the mark here?

Not sure what's going on with your elegance, but I came across a couple of links that might be of some help. I've had my share of coral issues, and sometimes it's just a matter of digging through some old threads. Check these out:

Re: Separating elegance coral from its skeleton
Honestly, I think it's likely a lost cause.
It's been in a low flow area since day one, so that's not the issue. Too many changes at once probably did it in. If it makes it till the weekend, I'll consider the super glue trick unless someone advises against it.

Appreciate the help guys.
Re: Separating elegance coral from its skeleton
I had a similar experience with my elegance after accidentally damaging it with a scraper. I decided to frag it and never looked back. I used a very sharp Chef's knife to make a swift, downward cut in the tank, slicing through the polyp and skeleton in one fluid motion. Although the skeleton broke up a bit, it wasn't a major issue.
Since then, I've fragged it twice more to keep its size under control, and the elegance never fully closed up. The frags and the mother colony healed within about a month.
