how to monitor Betta fish health

Post by finchly »

I've had my betta for about six months now, and I'm not sure if he's doing okay. His fins look a bit ragged, and he's not as active as usual. What are the best ways to check if he's healthy?

First thing's first, check your water params. Ammonia and nitrite gotta be zero, nitrate under 20 ppm. If those are sketchy, it's gonna mess with your fish big time. Also, how often you doing water changes?

I agree with bronco5 about the water quality. Ragged fins could mean fin rot or stress. What's your tank size? Bettas need at least 5 gallons to thrive. Also, any tankmates? They can stress him out if they're too aggressive.

Yep, water's key. But don't freak out if he's just chillin' more than usual. Mine does that sometimes, then bounces back. You got a heater? They're tropical fish, so temps below 78F can make 'em sluggish.

True, but ragged fins ain't normal. You gotta rule out fin rot or nipping. What's your filter like? Strong flow can stress 'em out too.
