Is my fish sick and needs urgent care?
Is my fish sick and needs urgent care?
I've got two fin-tank males, one in my room and the other in my office. The office one I've had for about 6 months now. He came from a family that couldn't take care of him anymore, so I took him in to give him a better life. His tank was a mess, dirty water and all, so I cleaned him up, got him a 5-gallon Fluval Chi tank, and gave him some plants. I know what I'm doing, I've had betta fish before, but this one's got me stumped. About a week ago, I noticed the tips of his bottom fins are turning white. Not see-through or spotty, just a solid white like they were painted. He's still acting normal, but those white fin tips are weird. What's going on?

Just figured it out - my other fin_tank male has it too.

To help you better, could you please post a picture of your betta fish so we can get a clearer view of the issue?
Regarding the tank conditions, what are the current levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, as well as the pH? Are both tanks filtered, and if so, how long have they been set up for? I'd also like to know how often you clean the filters and what method you use for cleaning them.
In terms of maintenance, how frequently do you perform water changes and clean the gravel and substrate? What percentage of the water do you change during each cycle?

You might wanna try Bettafix - it's like 6 bucks and it's supposed to take care of the white spot ick.
Re: Is my fish sick and needs urgent care?
Don't waste your money on Bettafix, trust me it's useless and won't do a thing for Ich. If it is indeed Ich, the most effective treatment is a combination of clean water and heat. Raise the water temperature to 30 degrees Celsius for a full 7 days and you'll be good to go.
