Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
So I got some discus granules by accident, and I'm wondering if it's cool to feed them to my guppies and platies. They're in a 20-gallon tank with a sponge filter, and I usually feed them flakes. The granules are kinda big, but I can crush them. Anyone tried this?
Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
I've done this before with no issues. The key is to crush the granules into smaller pieces so the guppies and platies can eat them easily. Just make sure the ingredients are safe for them. Check for high protein content, since discus food is usually richer than what guppies need.
Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
Yep, I've fed my platies discus granules too. They're chill with it, but like bronzefox said, crush 'em up. My tank's got sand substrate and a bunch of Java moss, and the fish seem happy. Just don't overfeed, or you'll mess with your water params.
Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
I agree with the others. Crushing the granules is a good idea. Also, keep an eye on your fish after the first few feedings to make sure they're not having any digestive issues. My platies once got bloated from too much protein, so moderation is key.bould wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 4:27 pm So I got some discus granules by accident, and I'm wondering if it's cool to feed them to my guppies and platies. Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
Nah, I wouldn't risk it. Discus food's got way more protein than guppies need, and it's pricy too. Why not just stick to regular flakes or pellets? My guppies are in a 15-gallon with a hang-on-back filter, and they're thriving on basic stuff. No need to overcomplicate it.
Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
I've fed my guppies crushed discus granules before, and they loved it. Just make sure you're not overdoing it. My tank's got a bunch of floating plants, and the fish are always active. If you're worried, mix it with their regular food.
Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try crushing a few granules and see how they react. I'll keep an eye on the water params too, since my tank's got a bit of a biofilm issue lately.
Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
Biofilm can be a sign of overfeeding or excess nutrients. Maybe cut back on feeding for a day or two and see if it clears up. Also, consider adding some shrimp or snails to help with cleanup.
Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
Yeah, biofilm's no big deal if you've got cleanup crew. My nerite snails go ham on that stuff. Just don't let it get outta control, or it'll look sketchy.
Re: Feeding discus granules to guppies and platies
I've found that reducing light exposure helps with biofilm too. If your tank's near a window or has strong lighting, try cutting back a bit. My 20-gallon has a LED light on for 6 hours a day, and the biofilm's minimal.
