Best Plants for a High pH Tank

Post by rhythmix »

I've got a tank with pH around 8.0, and my plants are struggling. What's gonna work best in these conditions? I've got a 20 gallon with sand substrate, moderate lighting, and a basic HOB filter. Tried Java Fern but it's not thriving.

High pH can be tricky, but don't worry! Anubias and Vallisneria are solid choices. They're tough and can handle harder water. I've had success with both in my 30 gallon, pH 8.2. Just make sure they're getting enough light and nutrients. Root tabs helped mine a lot.

Yep, Anubias is a champ. Also, check out Hornwort. That stuff grows like crazy, doesn't care about pH much. I've got it floating in my 40 breeder with similar params. Just be ready to trim it often, it's a beast.

What about water changes? Are you doing them regularly? High pH tanks can build up minerals faster. I do 25% weekly in my 20 gallon, keeps things stable for the plants.

Hornwort's a good call. I've seen it work in high pH tanks too. Just watch out for shedding if the light's too low.

Dude, try some Cryptocoryne Wendtii. It's chill with higher pH, and the red varieties look sick. I've got some in my 55 gallon, pH 7.8, and they're spreading like mad. Just don't move 'em around too much, they hate that.

That's a great point. Regular water changes are key. I also recommend testing your KH and GH. High pH often means hard water, and plants like Vallisneria love the extra minerals.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna grab some Anubias and Hornwort this weekend. I'll up my water changes too, see if that helps.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes. Oh, and if you're using liquid ferts, go easy at first. High pH can make some nutrients less available, so you might need to tweak the dose.

Yeah, and don't stress if the plants take a minute to adjust. Some melt is normal, especially with Crypts. They'll bounce back if the roots are healthy.
