betta fish and tank dividers

Post by MidnightFly »

Has anyone used tank dividers for multiple males? I've got a 20 gallon long and wanna keep two, but I'm worried about stress. The dividers I've seen are either mesh or solid acrylic. Any pros or cons?

I've used both types. Mesh lets water flow better, but the boys can still see each other, which might stress them out. Solid acrylic keeps 'em chill but you gotta watch the water params since flow's restricted. What's your filter setup?

I tried mesh once. They flared constantly. Switched to solid and they stopped. Water flow wasn't great though. Had to add a second sponge filter.

My friend used a DIY divider with holes poked in it. Worked kinda sketchy but the fish seemed okay. Not sure I'd recommend it though.

Solid dividers are the way to go if you're gonna keep multiple males. Just gotta stay on top of water changes, maybe bump 'em to twice a week. What's your current schedule?

Running a canister with a spray bar. Think that'll cut it with a solid divider?

Yep, a canister should handle it. Just point the spray bar along the length of the tank to keep circulation even. How often you testing the water?

If you're gonna use a solid divider, maybe add an air stone on each side. Helps with oxygen and keeps the water moving. Cheap fix.

Second the air stone idea. Used one when I had dividers. Made a big difference.

Never thought about air stones. Gonna try that next time. Thanks for the tip.
