Is kribensis cichlid a compatible addition to my aquarium?
Is kribensis cichlid a compatible addition to my aquarium?
I'm thinking of adding a pair of Kribensis Cichlids to my 75 gallon tank. Got a few other fish in there - 3 small tire track eels, a small fire eel, a 12" BGK, an ornate bichir, an endchelichi bichir, and a sengal bichir, plus some type of small datnoid (honestly, not entirely sure what kind). Planning to upgrade most of these to a 125-300 gallon in about 7 months. Would the Kribensis be okay in my current tank, and would they still be okay once I make the upgrade?

Honestly, I'd hold off on adding those Kribensis Cichlids for now. With the tank upgrade coming in 7 months, it's probably best to just wait until then to introduce new fish.
Re: Is kribensis cichlid a compatible addition to my aquarium?
Thanks for the advice, I'll hold off on the Kribensis for now. My main concern is their compatibility with the other fish when I upgrade. I know they're notorious for defending their eggs and hiding spots, which could lead to issues with the bichirs, eels, and even the knives. With more bichirs and some catfish being added to the 125-300 gallon, I'm worried about potential conflicts. Do you think the extra space will be enough to mitigate any aggression?
Re: Is kribensis cichlid a compatible addition to my aquarium?
Kribs are generally peaceful, but they do become defensive when breeding - it's not aggression, just protection. I'm concerned that they might struggle with the other species you've got, especially the bichirs and catfish you plan to add. They can get pretty territorial when they're defending their eggs or hiding spots, and I'm not sure that would mesh well with your tank's inhabitants.
Re: Is kribensis cichlid a compatible addition to my aquarium?
I appreciate the insight, so even if I gave the Kribs their own little territory, you don't think they'd work out with the other fish I've got planned, right? I'd think the eels would be the main issue, what with them being nocturnal and all, but the Kribs being protective of their space.
Re: Is kribensis cichlid a compatible addition to my aquarium?
Your existing fish are essentially predators that'll see the Kribensis as potential prey. Given time, some of them will be big enough to take down a full-grown Krib, and even as juveniles, I expect them to pick off every Krib youngster that's born in the tank.
Re: Is kribensis cichlid a compatible addition to my aquarium?
I wouldn't think they'd be a good fit for kribs, seems like they'd be too large and a bit too aggressive.
