What about flow rate? Does the sump size affect how fast you can run your return pump? I've got a 1200 GPH pump, but not sure if that's too much for a 30-gallon sump.

A 1200 GPH pump is fine for a 30-gallon sump, but you'll need to dial it back with a valve or use a manifold to split the flow. Too much turbulence in the sump can cause microbubbles and noise.

I've found that a 30-gallon sump is the sweet spot for tanks between 75 and 100 gallons. It balances space and functionality well. Just make sure your stand can handle the weight.

Does anyone use a filter sock in their sump? I've heard mixed things about whether they're necessary for coral tanks.

I use them but swap them out every 3 days to avoid nitrate buildup. They're great for mechanical filtration but can become a nutrient trap if neglected.
