common mistakes in Betta care

Post by Raven »

I've seen a lot of new keepers make the same mistakes with their bettas. What's the most common issue you've noticed, like small tanks or overfeeding?

Small tanks are a big one, but honestly, overfeeding is just as bad. They'll eat until they're bloated, and that can mess with their health real quick. Gotta stick to a couple pellets twice a day.

Yep, and don't forget about water changes. Some folks think they can skip 'em if the tank looks clean, but nah, that's a sketchy move. Ammonia builds up fast in those tiny setups.

For real. And if you're not testing the water, you're flying blind. Get a kit, it's worth the cash.

Another thing is the heater. Bettas need warm water, like 78-80°F. Cold tanks stress 'em out, and that's when they get sick. Seen too many people skip the heater because they think it's optional.

I'd say the biggest mistake is not cycling the tank before adding the fish. A lot of new keepers don't even know what that means. It's cruel to throw them into an uncycled tank, they'll suffer for sure.

Yeah, cycling is non-negotiable. And while we're at it, stop using those tiny bowls. A 5-gallon minimum is the way to go. They need space to swim, not just float around like a decoration.

Thanks for the input, everyone. It's clear there's a lot to consider beyond just dropping them in a tank.

Exactly. And if you're impatient, just get a pre-cycled filter or some seeded media from a friend. No excuses.

Also, let's talk about tankmates. Some people throw in aggressive fish or fin-nippers, then wonder why their betta's stressed. Do your research before adding anything else to the tank.
