why is my frogbit sinking?

Post by ridgewave »

My Frogbit keeps sinking to the bottom of my 20-gallon tank. It's been happening for a week now. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. I've got a Fluval Aquasky light on for 8 hours a day. Substrate is sand, and I dose Easy Green once a week. Tankmates are just a few Neon Tetras and a Betta. Any ideas?

Sounds like your Frogbit might be getting too much flow. What kind of filter are you running? If it's a HOB or canister, the surface agitation could be messing with the roots. Frogbit likes calm water, so maybe baffle the output or switch to a sponge filter. Also, check if the leaves are melting—could be a light issue.

Yo, my Frogbit did the same thing when I had my Aqueon QuietFlow cranked up. Cut the flow, and it bounced back in like, three days. Also, sketchy light timing can mess with it. You sure 8 hours is enough? Mine digs 10.

I'm using a Fluval C2 HOB. The flow is pretty strong, so that might be it. Leaves look fine, no melting. Gonna try reducing the flow first.

Good call. If the leaves are healthy, it's probably just the flow. You can stuff some sponge in the output to calm it down. Also, Frogbit hates getting wet on top—if water splashes onto the leaves, they'll rot. Keep an eye on that.

For real, Frogbit's drama queen about wet leaves. Mine noped out when I had a lid trapping condensation. Now I run lidless, and it's chill. Also, you dosing any iron? Frogbit's roots go nuts for it.

Thanks, both. I'll baffle the filter and check the leaves for splashes. Not dosing iron yet, but I'll grab some if the flow fix doesn't work. Appreciate the help!
