Cooling fan for 20-gallon high tank
Cooling fan for 20-gallon high tank
I've got a 20-gallon high tank that's running a bit warm lately, around 82°F. I'm thinking about adding a cooling fan but not sure what kind to get. Any recommendations? My room temp stays around 75°F, and I've got a lid on the tank.

A clip-on fan should work fine for your setup. I use a USB-powered one from Amazon on my 20-gallon, and it drops the temp by about 3-4°F. Just make sure it's angled to blow across the water surface, not directly into the tank. Also, keep an eye on evaporation, it'll increase with a fan.

I've had good luck with the AC Infinity multifan. It's quiet and adjustable, so you can tweak the airflow. Just remember to top off the water more often, as willow95 mentioned, evaporation will spike. How often are you doing water changes right now?

Yep, fans are a game-changer. I rigged up a cheap desk fan with some zip ties, and it's been chillin' my tank for months. Just gotta watch the water level, like everyone's saying. You might wanna bump up your top-offs to every other day.
Re: Cooling fan for 20-gallon high tank
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check out the AC Infinity and the clip-on options. I do weekly water changes, about 20%, but I'll keep an eye on evaporation.

If you're already doing weekly changes, you should be fine. Just monitor the TDS if you're topping off a lot, as minerals can concentrate over time.
Re: Cooling fan for 20-gallon high tank
I've heard mixed things about fans. Do they really make that much of a difference? My tank's at 80°F, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle.
Re: Cooling fan for 20-gallon high tank
They do, especially if your room temp fluctuates. Even a 2-3°F drop can matter for sensitive species. What fish are you keeping?
Re: Cooling fan for 20-gallon high tank
Fans are legit, dude. I slapped one on my 20-high, and it's been smooth sailing. Just don't go too cheap, or you'll end up with a noisy mess. Also, keep the lid cracked a bit for better airflow.
Re: Cooling fan for 20-gallon high tank
I've been using a small desk fan for my tank, and it's been working great. Just make sure it's not blowing too hard, or you'll get a lot of surface agitation. Some fish don't like that.
