Is my sun coral dying?
Is my sun coral dying?
I just got my new sun coral home from the LPS and was pretty bummed to see one of the heads had partially to almost completely died back - I'm still trying to figure out how I missed that at the store. The rest of it looks really healthy, though, and I've even been able to feed it already, even when my light was off. Is there anything I can do to try and save the damaged head, or am I just out of luck?

Just keep feeding it and it should recover.
Re: Is my sun coral dying?
I'm no expert but I'd keep feeding it like crazy and give it plenty of flow, sun corals love that stuff, even laminar flow. How are you feeding it, are you targeting it or using a soda bottle? Do you remove it from display during water changes?

Just got it, so I'm game for any suggestions, but I tried the pop bottle method last night and it seemed to do the trick.

Here's a helpful link for sun coral care, check it out: melevsreef.com/suncoral.html

You're good. I've had a similar experience with my black sun coral colony - it bleached most of a branch, but bounced back with proper feeding after being neglected for 10 weeks. As long as algae doesn't take over the discolored areas, you should be in the clear.

Yeah, feed it like crazy, that's my two cents.
Re: Is my sun coral dying?
Had a friend who'd hang this little box in the tank, put the sun coral in it every night, and feed away. The thing was so trained to this, the polyp extension was wild as it fed separate from the tank flow.

This one's actually a pretty nice specimen, aside from that one polyp that's struggling. Most LFS don't usually have 'em looking this good. Just keep feeding it, a lot and often, and it should do just fine.
