kribensis cichlid eye growth issue

Post by duskox »

I'm having some concerns about my female Krib's eye - does anyone know what might be causing the issue and how I can treat it?
My tank parameters are spot on and stable, and she's been living with the male and their offspring without any issues, so I'm a bit stumped.

The eye issue on your female Krib appears to be excess mucous, likely a protective response to an injury, possibly caused by the fish damaging its eye.

Ensure your water parameters remain stable, and I recommend a 75% water change daily, along with a thorough gravel cleaning of the substrate, for the next week. Be certain to dechlorinate any new water before adding it to the tank.

If your filter hasn't been cleaned in the past two weeks, now would be a good time to do so.

Given the good conditions, the fish should heal within a few days without medication. However, if the issue persists or worsens after a few water changes, it might require treatment. At this point, it seems to be just excess mucous.

Colin, thanks for your input - I appreciate it. I did the water changes as you suggested and my other Krib cichlids seem fine, with all water parameters stable. However, the eye issue still hasn't cleared up. I've attached a new picture for your reference. Any additional advice on how to proceed would be great.

Considering the female Krib's eye issue hasn't cleared up despite the initial water changes, I'd recommend taking a more targeted approach. You could try using a broad-spectrum fish medication that covers bacteria, fungus, and protozoan infections.

It's probably a good idea to treat the fish in a separate tank, just to be on the safe side. Before adding any medication, make sure to remove the carbon from the filter. This will help the medication work more effectively.

Also, try to increase aeration and surface turbulence in the treatment tank to maximize oxygen levels in the water.
