Choosing between male and female electric yellows

Post by Reelstar »

Hi, I'm having trouble figuring out the sex of my sunnygolds. They both have egg spots, but no black on the anal fin. The paler one has more black on the dorsal fin than the other. I'm not sure if I have two males or if females can have egg spots too. I'd really appreciate some help with this, thanks.

Can you post some pics of your sunnygolds? That might help us figure out if you've got males or females.

Apologies for the delay in getting back, here's a pic of one of them, I'll try and get the other one up later... what's your take on it, male or female?

I'd say they're too young to determine their sex with certainty. Typically, dominant males develop darker fins and what I've come to call a 'mustache' - a sort of ashy color by their Sprig.

I don't usually go by the 'egg spot' rule, as I've seen numerous female fish with them. While I haven't verified this through breeding, I don't consider egg spots a definitive indicator when sexing African Cichlids.

I agree with creekdwlr, they look too young to be able to reliably sex them.

I'd appreciate others' thoughts, but from what I see, I'm pretty confident that one's a female.
