Choosing between male and female electric yellows
Choosing between male and female electric yellows
Hi, I'm having trouble figuring out the sex of my sunnygolds. They both have egg spots, but no black on the anal fin. The paler one has more black on the dorsal fin than the other. I'm not sure if I have two males or if females can have egg spots too. I'd really appreciate some help with this, thanks.
Re: Choosing between male and female electric yellows
Hi, I'm really stuck and I was hoping someone could help me out with this.
Re: Choosing between male and female electric yellows
Can you post some pics of your sunnygolds? That might help us figure out if you've got males or females.
Re: Choosing between male and female electric yellows
Apologies for the delay in getting back, here's a pic of one of them, I'll try and get the other one up later... what's your take on it, male or female?
Re: Choosing between male and female electric yellows
I'd say they're too young to determine their sex with certainty. Typically, dominant males develop darker fins and what I've come to call a 'mustache' - a sort of ashy color by their Sprig.
I don't usually go by the 'egg spot' rule, as I've seen numerous female fish with them. While I haven't verified this through breeding, I don't consider egg spots a definitive indicator when sexing African Cichlids.

Here's the other one, finally got a pic of it, what do you think?
Re: Choosing between male and female electric yellows
I agree with creekdwlr, they look too young to be able to reliably sex them.

Thanks for the input, appreciate it.
Re: Choosing between male and female electric yellows
I'd appreciate others' thoughts, but from what I see, I'm pretty confident that one's a female.Reelstar wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 12:07 pm Hi, I'm having trouble figuring out the sex of my sunnygolds.
