What's Your Favorite Plant Combo?
What's Your Favorite Plant Combo?
What's your go-to plant combo for a low-tech tank? I'm running a 20-gallon with sand substrate and moderate lighting, but my Anubias and Java Fern aren't thriving. Looking for something easy but visually striking.
Re: What's Your Favorite Plant Combo?
I've had great luck with Cryptocoryne Wendtii and Amazon Swords in my low-tech setup. They're chill and don't need fancy lights or CO2. Just make sure your sand isn't too compact, or the roots might struggle.

Yep, Crypts are solid. I'd throw in some Dwarf Sagittaria for a grassy vibe. It spreads like crazy but looks dope. Just keep an eye on it or it'll take over.

For a 20-gallon, I'd recommend a mix of Anubias Nana, Java Moss, and Vallisneria. The Vallisneria will add height, while the moss and Anubias provide texture. Ensure your lighting is consistent, around 6–8 hours daily.

Second this! My Crypts melted at first but bounced back hard. Now they're my tank's MVP.

Bro, try some Marimo balls and Duckweed. Super low maintenance, and the Duckweed gives that natural, overgrown look. Just don't let it block all the light, or your other plants will throw a fit.

If you're open to a bit more work, Ludwigia Repens and Hornwort add killer color and movement. They grow fast, so you'll need to trim often, but the payoff is worth it.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Gonna try the Crypts and Dwarf Sag combo first. Fingers crossed!

Duckweed is a double-edged sword, though. Once it's in, it's near impossible to get rid of. Learned that the hard way.

True story. My tank looked like a swamp after a month. Had to nuke it with a surface skimmer. Never again.
