Do Bettas need a filter
Do Bettas need a filter
I've heard mixed opinions on whether they need a filter. My tank is 5 gallons, no filter, just a heater set to 78F. Water changes every 3 days. They seem fine but wanna make sure I'm not missing something.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
Filters are a must, especially in smaller tanks. Without one, ammonia builds up fast. I run a sponge filter in my 10 gallon, keeps the water pristine. Also, weekly water changes, 20%, with Seachem Prime.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
Agreed. Even in a 5 gallon, a small sponge filter can make a huge difference. Bettas prefer gentle flow, so avoid strong filters. I've seen fewer health issues in filtered tanks.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
I dunno, man. My dude's been chillin' in a 3 gallon no filter for months. Just do water changes like every 4 days, use Stress Coat. He's vibin'.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
Filters aren't just about ammonia. They host beneficial bacteria that stabilize the tank. Even if your fish seems fine now, long-term stability matters. A small internal filter or sponge filter is low-cost and low-maintenance.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
I've kept bettas for years, and filtered tanks always outperform unfiltered ones in longevity. A 5-gallon with a sponge filter, weekly 25% water changes, and a stable temp will give your fish the best life.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
Yeah, no filter is sketchy. Even if you're on top of water changes, spikes can happen. My boy got fin rot in an unfiltered tank, cleared up after I added a sponge filter.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
Filters are a game changer. My tank's 5 gallons, sponge filter, and my betta's colors popped after a week. Also, less work with water changes, just top off and vacuum the substrate monthly.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
Thanks for the input, everyone. Gonna grab a sponge filter and see how it goes. Appreciate the advice.
Re: Do Bettas need a filter
Good call. Let us know how it works out. Also, keep an eye on the flow, some bettas hate even the slightest current.
