Acan bleaching issues and solutions

Post by _tide »

I've got a favia and an SPS coral thriving right next to it, but for some reason, this acan is bleaching out.

Water params are: 1.026, Alk 9.3, cal 460, ph 7.8, and 81 degrees.

I'm wondering, could excessive flow be the culprit here?

Is it possible that the Favia's sweepers are coming into contact with the acan when the lights are out?

I don't think the Favia's sweepers are the issue. I'm planning to relocate the acan to a spot that receives less light, and also moving it further away just in case.

Do you feed the acan regularly? If not, that's where I'd start, not with relocating it. Try keeping the lights on at night to observe if the Favia's sweepers are indeed reaching the acan.

My Acan's in a corner spot, bottom front of the tank, all by its lonesome. It's doing awesome there, no coral drama to speak of.

Favias got those crazy long sweepers, but bleaching doesn't scream sweeper damage to me - I'd think it'd be more patchy if it was getting stung, like RTN/STN. That PH is a bit low, but it's alright. What's your definition of "too much" flow, though? We talkin' a 5000 gph powerhead blastin' it or what?

I've had issues keeping acans too, they always start out strong, putting out new heads, but then they just bleach out and recede.

I've found my acans do better in lower light conditions, they tend to stay closed if it's too bright, especially with just the white LEDs. They do seem to appreciate good flow though.

I'm no expert, but I had my acans on the sand, 22-23" deep under 2 Radion G3 Pros at 40% max, and they didn't do well with medium flow. I moved them up a few inches, took them off plugs, and put them on rock - still medium flow. Now they're doing better. I feed them cyclopeeze about 2 times a week, seems to be working.
