managing heavy rocks in a 60-gallon tank

Post by olixo »

Hey all,

Concerned about the weight and pressure on the glass.

Is 30KG of rock excessive for this aquarium size? The rocks I'm using are similar to granite, so no pH benefits like you'd get with limestone.

Should I consider adding a protective layer under the sand to safeguard the glass?

It shouldn't damage the glass as long as the top of the stand is completely flat. You'd be surprised at the weight some aquarists put in their tanks - I've seen flourwater setups with massive amounts of rock and they're fine. My own 29g has about 30lb of rock and I've had no problems so far.

I'd suggest using egg crate under the rock to prevent sharp edges from putting pressure on the glass.

Egg crate at the bottom is the way to go, then add your rocks and fill in with sand. This setup will help distribute the weight of the rocks across the glass, giving you added protection.
