best discus tank background ideas

Post by BoldOne »

What's the best background for a Discus tank? I've got a 75 gallon with sand substrate, driftwood, and some Amazon swords. Trying to decide between solid black, a natural river scene, or maybe a planted background. My fish are about 4 inches, and I do 50% water changes twice a week. Heater's set at 84°F, and I'm running a Fluval FX4. Just wanna make sure they're chill and not stressed.

Solid black backgrounds are often recommended for Discus tanks. They help the fish stand out and reduce stress by minimizing reflections. Your setup sounds good, but ensure the lighting isn't too bright. I use a low-intensity LED bar for 8 hours a day. Also, consider adding floating plants like frogbit to diffuse light further.

Yep, black's a solid choice. I've got a 120 gallon with black background, and my Discus are way more active since I switched from a blue one. They're paired with cardinal tetras and rummynose, and the contrast looks killer. Just make sure your water's pristine, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and nitrates under 10 ppm.

I'm all about the natural river scene. Got a 3D background with rocks and roots, and my Discus love hiding in the crevices. Tank's 90 gallons, temp at 86°F, and I feed them beef heart mix twice a day. The background's a bit pricey, but it's worth it for the vibe. Just avoid anything too busy, or it'll mess with their chill.

Black's the way to go, no doubt. It's not just about looks, it's science. Dark backgrounds reduce stress hormones in Discus. I've got a 100 gallon with black background, CO2 injection, and a heavily planted setup. Water changes are 30% daily for juveniles, but you can cut it to 50% weekly for adults. Keep the pH around 6.5, and you're golden.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Gonna try the black background first and see how they react. Appreciate the tips on lighting and water params too.

Let us know how it goes. I'd bet your Discus will perk up in a week or so. Oh, and if you're ever in doubt, just remember, happy fish = happy life. Keep it simple, keep it clean.

For sure, and don't forget to snap a pic. Love seeing how others' setups turn out. My tank's got a mix of manzanita wood and java fern, and the Discus are always grazing on the leaves. It's a whole vibe.
