comparison of spotted and normal manderin
I'm considering adding a normal mandarin goby to my 100-gallon tank, I already have a spotted mandarin. I know they generally don't do well with their own kind, but since they're different colors and the tank is quite large, I was wondering if I might be able to make it work.

Don't think that'd work fluxx, you can't just keep a male of one and a female of the other, right, but honestly I'm more concerned about the live rock, do you have enough to sustain two of them, they need about 90lbs each unless you're supplementing with frozen, I suppose that's doable though.

oh i'm not even sure if mine's male or female, to be honest
and yeah, mine does eat frozen as well
but i've got 35 kg of live rock, and the calculator says i need 44 kg

it's pretty straightforward to sex them - males have that distinctive dorsal fin, females don't.sweetie_22 wrote: ↑Mon May 19, 2025 11:33 pm I'm considering adding a normal mandarin goby to my 100-gallon tank, I already have a spotted mandarin. You're a bit short on the live rock, so would you look into supplementing with a pod culture and then hopefully wean them onto frozen in the long run?

If I got another, I'd get one that eats frozen brine, but I think I've got a good amount of pods already, I mean I occasionally see one floating dead and the clownfish eats it, and I see them swimming about. I'll check the sex of mine, see what I've got.
Re: comparison of spotted and normal manderin
I found this article about mandarin diners and it says this one guy, Melev, has 4 mandarins but only the green ones use the diner. I'm thinking that means the different colored ones can get along.

New to the salty side, I'm learning as I go. Just a quick question - when people say pods, are they referring to copepods, or is that a different thing altogether?
Re: comparison of spotted and normal manderin
Thanks for sharing that link, I'd read about someone keeping multiple mandarins but couldn't recall who. From my research, it seems females can coexist, but males tend to be aggressive towards each other.

so i'll probably check the sex of mine and see if i can get a normal manderin of the opposite sex, and find a jar for it too.
if mine's a female, should i get another female or should they be opposite like males and females?
i'm thinking like betta females, they get along but males don't, is it the same with manderins?

i'd personally go with mysis over brine, mate, it's got way more nutritional value, brine's a bit lacking, if you ask me. not too sure i'd risk chucking two mandarins in together, might not end well.
