Overstocked tank check

Post by Oceania »

Got a 55 gallon with 12 Angelfish, 6 Corydoras, and a bunch of Neon Tetras. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Filter is a Fluval 407, weekly 30% water changes. Plants are doing fine but the Angelfish seem stressed. Am I overstocked?

That sounds like a lot of fish for a 55. How big are the Angelfish?

Yeah, 12 Angelfish is pushing it. They need space to establish territories. I'd consider rehoming a few or upgrading to a 75 gallon. The Corydoras and Tetras are fine, but the Angelfish are the issue.

Agree with havenmix. Angelfish get big and territorial. Even in a 55, 12 is too many. You might see less stress if you cut it down to 6 or so.

What's your feeding routine? Overfeeding can mess with water quality even if params look good. Also, how's the tank layout? Lots of hiding spots?

Thanks for the advice. The Angelfish are about 3 inches each. I feed once a day, just enough they finish in 2 minutes. Tank has driftwood and lots of plants, but maybe not enough vertical space.

Angelfish love height. If you're keeping them, taller tanks are better. A 55 is long but not tall enough for their comfort. Rehoming some would help, but if you're attached, consider a taller tank.

Yeah, Angelfish are drama queens. They'll stress out over anything. If you're not gonna upgrade, at least get some floating plants to break up sightlines. Helps with the weird vibe in there.

Floating plants are a good call. Frogbit or Water Lettuce would work. Also, check your lighting. Too bright can stress them out.

If you're sticking with the 55, maybe add more vertical decor like tall rocks or wood. Gives them more space to claim. And yeah, floating plants are a game changer.
