setting up a fish only tank

Post by talonix »

hi all

as you're aware, i'm in the process of setting up a pretty sizeable tank and i'd love to get your input on the type of fish you'd like to see in there. the credit crunch has started to bite, so let's keep things reasonable - no more expensive fish for me, at least for now.

just list the large fish you think would be great additions, and we'll go from there. please bear in mind i'm not keen on groupers, anglerfish, eels, boxfish, puffers, triggers, or hogfish - especially triggers, to be honest.

so, what are your suggestions? let me know and we'll see what we can make happen.

regards scott

Most of mine are out then, lol...
Given the space, I'd love to see a predator tank in there.
3 radiata lions would be awesome,
1 antennata lion would add some variety,
and a leopard moray would be a great addition.
A zebra moray would also work well,
and a blue line snapper would be nice, too.
I know you said no groupers, but if you're open to it, a red grouper would be amazing.
A clown tang would be a great choice, nasty enough to hold its own,
and a purple sailfin tang would add some color.
Lastly, a birdnose wrasse would be a nice touch.

Out of that list, I'd only add the purple sailfin tang and the clown tang, lol. I've had mixed results with morays in the past, so I think I'll pass on those. I've also had some bad luck with eels, fluxx, so I've decided not to add any to the tank.

copperband, 6 line wrasse, gold banded maroon clowns - always liked these,
yellow tangs, 6 of them would be great
2 yellow belly regals would add some nice colour
emperor tang, would be an awesome addition

just write down any fish you think would be great in the tank and we'll see what's most popular, my new sump's on the way, due to arrive on the 13th of July, it's a bit bigger than the old one, 4x3x3 compared to 3x2x2.

still got the overflow box so that's covered, the new sump's gonna have a drain at the top on the back glass, auto top-up, and a floating ball that'll refill the sump with ro salted water from the back room if the water level drops, another hole in the wall. also got a nitrate reactor on the way, not sure what else to add yet, so tell me what you think, happy to spend the cash if it's worth it. just ordered a vortech system, didn't realize how pricey it was lol.

Although they do come with a hefty price tag, those vortech systems are incredible pieces of equipment, definitely worth the investment in my opinion, lol.

Here's my list of fish I'd like to see, some big, some not so big:

Dog face puffer's an interesting one,
Foxface rabbit fish are cool,
Naso tang's another,
Emperor angel's a beauty,
Elephant nose is a weird one but I like it,
Jawfish are always fun to watch,
Valentin puffer's a mystery to me, only seen it on youtube,
Queen angelfish and French angelfish are both nice,
Lined butterfly fish are lovely,
Purple firtideflow's a mouthful,
Clarion angelfish is way too pricey, my LFS wants £3000+ for one,
Orbiculate batfish is another weird one,
Fiddler stingray's a nice addition,
Dogfish are always cool,
Pilotfish are interesting,
Marine betta's a beauty,
Flame hawkfish and Falco hawkfish are both nice,

Let me know what you think.

Love the tank plan, Scott - go all out and make it a stunning reef setup, the dimensions are perfect for it.
