Leveling up the aquarium hobby

Post by MorningBreeze »

I've been keeping a 20 gallon planted tank for about a year now, but I feel like I'm stuck in a rut. How do y'all take your setups to the next level? I've got some Anubias, Java Fern, and a few Neon Tetras, but it's kinda basic. What's the move?

First thing I'd recommend is upgrading your lighting if you haven't already. A good LED setup can make a huge difference for plant growth. Also, consider adding some driftwood or rocks for hardscape. It'll give your tank more dimension and provide hiding spots for your fish.

Agreed with texaslow on the hardscape. I'd also suggest experimenting with different plant species. Try adding some stem plants like Rotala or Ludwigia for variety. They grow fast and can really fill out the background. What's your current lighting situation?

Thanks for the tips! I've got a basic LED light that came with the tank, so maybe it's time for an upgrade. Any specific brands y'all recommend?

Yo, if you're gonna splurge, go for a Fluval Plant 3.0. It's pricey but worth it. Also, don't sleep on CO2 if you're serious about leveling up. Even a cheap DIY setup can make your plants pop.

I'd start small with the CO2. Maybe try liquid carbon first to see how your plants respond. It's less intimidating and easier to manage. Also, how often are you doing water changes? Consistency there can make a big difference.

Honestly, I'd just mess with the scape first. Move stuff around, add some new rocks, maybe a different substrate layer. Sometimes a fresh look is all you need to feel like you're leveling up. Plus, it's fun.

Have you considered adding more fish species? A small school of Corydoras or some Cherry Shrimp could add more activity to your tank. Just make sure they're compatible with your Tetras.

I second the Fluval light. It's a game-changer. Also, don't forget about ferts. A good all-in-one fertilizer can help your plants thrive.

If you're feeling adventurous, try a blackwater setup. It's a whole different vibe and can make your Tetras look stunning. Just add some Indian Almond Leaves and let the tannins do their thing. Super easy to maintain too.
