keeping jewel cichlids

Post by speedster »

hello, just rescued a couple of jewel cichlids from a 60l biorb, was wondering if its possible to sex them and if they are both males would they get along?

I've tried to sex my own, but I've had no luck, the only reliable method I've heard of is by examining the vents, seems pretty hit or miss though. If you do end up with a pair, be prepared for some intense aggression when they spawn, good luck with that.

You're in for a challenge with those two. Jewel cichlids are notorious for being super aggressive, I had one in a community tank once and it was a disaster. I ended up having to keep her alone, couldn't keep her with any other fish, she'd attack everything.

Vent sexing can be a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be a pro. The pics I attached should give you a good idea of what to look for - males have a more pointed papilla, while females have a rounded one.
