choosing a betta: male or female?

Post by SlyFox »

Getting a new pet soon, a betta.
Which one's better, male or female? Generally speaking, who's more playful?

In terms of temperament, I don't think it makes a huge difference, especially if you're keeping it solo. Males are generally more colourful and can have those gorgeous long fins, but the downside is that those long fins can make swimming a bit tricky for them, and they're more prone to fin rot. Females have come a long way in terms of colour, you can find some really vibrant ones now. I've always had a soft spot for plakat males, but that's just personal preference.

any type of plakats are really awesome
i'm also a fan of wild bettas, their fins are pretty sturdy and not as flowy, which is pretty cool
